Tadatoshi Akiba served as an associate professor in the United States at Tufts University and as a member of Japan’s House of Representatives, Mr. Akiba assumed the role of Mayor of Hiroshima in 1999. Throughout his three terms spanning 12 years, while also serving as president of Mayors for Peace, he dedicated himself to the cause of nuclear disarmament. In recognition of his efforts, he was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2010, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Asia.
